Abstract

Medical imaging now plays a major role in diagnosis, choice of therapy, and follow-up. However, patients are often intimidated by the multiple imaging modalities available, the indications for their use, the imposing equipment, what the examinations are like and how long they last, and the advantages and disadvantages of various procedures. This book is designed to provide explanations for these and other issues in order to relieve some of the anxiety related to medical imaging studies.

Abstract

In 104 cases featuring over 500, high-quality images, Interventional Radiology Cases is a thorough and accessible review of the interventional procedures that radiology residents are expected to be familiar with upon completion of residency and general radiologists need to know for recertification examinations. The cases present both benign and malignant conditions and all pertinent imaging modalities incorporated including: CT, MR, PET, fluoroscopy, and ultrasound. Part of the Cases in Radiology series, this book follows the easy-to-use format of question and answer in which the patient histo

Abstract

Carcinomas of the larynx and hypopharynx present unique challenges when it comes to their assessment and management. Management involves the essential dilemma of optimizing cure rates while also ensuring that potential disability due to compromised airway, voice and swallowing is minimized. Treatment decisions involve careful disease assessment, judicious multispecialty decision-making, and subsequent meticulous implementation of the selected treatment modalities. The critical nature of each of these steps has led to dramatic advances in assessment techniques (radiology, endoscopy and photography, stroboscopy, narrow band imaging, contact endoscopy) and also in treatment methods (radiation therapy, combined concurrent chemo-radiation, combined sequential chemo-radiation, trans-oral CO2 laser and robotic surgery, partial laryngectomy, total laryngectomy, extended total laryngectomy). As such, treatment decisions have become increasingly complex with the twin objectives of maximizing cure as well as function preservation and are based on tumor stage, tumor location, systemic co-morbidities, nutritional status, patient priorities, and social and economic factors. This multidisciplinary book has been written by a team of editors with considerable experience and expertise in these critical areas and a deep understanding of teamwork and the strengths and limitations of individual technologies and treatments. It presents a homogeneous and unbiased view that is applicable to all specialties involved in the care of larynx and hypopharynx cancers. .

Abstract

Oral radiology board examinations are notoriously difficult and stressful, requiring a sound working knowledge of all the standard exams and disease pathology encountered in radiology practice. Radiology: The Oral Boards Primer concisely and comprehensively organizes the essential information needed to pass the board exams in diagnostic radiology in an easy to review and easy to memorize format. Drawing on pertinent and key differential diagnoses, the authors have assembled and organized the diagnoses most likely to appear on the exam and illustrated them with essential images to reinforce the findings associated with each differential. Additionally, with each finding set a mnemonic is provided to augment recall of any missing components of the differential that would be considered important. Because of their concise presentation, many cases can be examined, interpreted, completed, and memorized very rapidly in a single sitting. Since the majority of cases contain prototypical representations of pathology, the book also serves as an excellent reference during residency training, as well as a source for many years after the reader has taken and passed the oral board examination. Thoughtfully designed for test success, Radiology: The Oral Boards Primer will greatly assist in the preparation for the American Board of Radiology examination and inspire the assuredness and confidence that comes from being superbly prepared.

Abstract

This book offers a collection of specimen multiple choice questions (MCQs) for the first FRCR examination in clinical radiology that is for the physics module. It includes questions arranged in nine sets of 40 MCQs following the examination format. Additionally, chapters cover explanation to some of the answers for better understanding of the topics. The book covers updated syllabus of Royal College of Radiology (RCR), UK on scientific basis of medical imaging, including topics in molecular imaging. Each chapter with a practice set comprises of questions arranged in the order of the syllabus of the examination, starting from the basis of medical imaging and radiation physics to the principles of specific modalities and safety issues. This book offers assistance to candidates preparing for the first FRCR examination, clinical radiology trainees, and radiology and nuclear medicine postgraduate students.

Abstract

This book covers the imaging of thoracic structures with a focus on evaluation of the lungs. Pulmonary conditions are the most common global cause of mortality and morbidity, with lung cancer and tuberculosis being prevalent diseases in the developed and developing world, respectively. In the last few years there have been rapid changes in the imaging interpretation of lung diseases, particularly imaging of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. However, updated literature is not available yet. Filling this gap, the book provides radiologists with up-to-date, handy information on reading chest scans. This book uses standard terms and lexicons to describe the imaging findings. It consists of 14 chapters, and includes more than 1200 illustrations covering both commonly and rarely encountered conditions. The first chapter discusses imaging patterns and signs in thoracic imaging, while the chapter on interstitial lung diseases describes the hallmarks that are useful in the diagnostic pathway of these diseases. This chapter also incorporates the latest diagnostic categories of UIP based on CT patterns, and provides pictorial examples. Written by experts in the field, the book highlights imaging features and relevant clinical findings that may help in reaching diagnosis, and wherever possible, it presents the imaging features in tables for ease of memorizing.

Abstract

This EDiR guide has a practical rather than a theoretical focus, and is intended as a reference tool for potential EDiR candidates who would like to gain a better understanding of the EDiR examination. A pool of experts has made every possible effort to create a single source that contains everything needed to successfully pass the EDiR examination. Times have changed, and there is certainly a new generation of radiologists who will find this cutting-edge tool a “must-have” to familiarize themselves with the examination quickly and easily. The book is divided into the following main sections: one chapter for each subspecialty; one chapter on Safety, Management and Imaging Procedures; another on Principles of Imaging Techniques and Processing; and lastly, one on Management. This structure follows the same pattern as the EDiR examination, which is based on the European Training Curriculum (ETC) for Radiology released by the European Society of Radiology (ESR). Each subspecialty is covered using the same basic structure: Multiple Response Questions (MRQs), Short Cases (SCs) and CORE Cases from one of the most recent EDiR examinations. Students will thus be able to see all the questions from a recent examination and learn from the answers and comments provided by our pool of experts. Clinical cases as electronic supplementary material complete the book, and links to EDiR preparation sessions are also included, allowing students to improve their knowledge of specific areas.

Abstract

Radioisotope therapy is an internal form of radiation used to treat cancer; it may be administered orally or intravenously and represents the nearest treatment option to the 'magic bullet', specifically targeting sites of disease whilst sparing surrounding normal tissues. Radioisotope therapy has an important role to play in modern medicine, particularly in the treatment of thyroid disease, neuroendocrine tumours, bone metastasis and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. It is found in both thediagnostic setting and in therapy, but recently there has been a renaissance in the application of radioisotope uns
