"A key theme of this book is that we urgently need a therapeutic ethos in order to bring both educational and therapeutic sensibilities to bear on the issue of children's wellbeing, if truly effective and appropriate policy responses to the current malaise are to be fashioned. Not least, we must pay particular attention to childhood experience, showing that scientific and technical developments are always secondary to the resources of the human soul, if we are to minimize the extent to which today's children will need therapy as adults. This will entail moving beyond narrowly mechanistic definitions of, and ways of thinking about, "well-being" and the psychological therapies. This book offers pointers to the kinds of arguments that can inform what is rapidly becoming a central concern of politicians and policy-makers. A unique book in the field, Childhood, Well-being and a Therapeutic Ethos will be core cross-disciplinary reading in a range of academic and training contexts, including within Education, Psychology and Sociology departments, on early childhood studies and policy studies modules and degrees, and on child and other psychotherapy and counselling trainings."--Provided by publisher.

The essays in this collection aim to waken contemporary discussions of ethos(and of rhetoric generally) from their Western, classical-Aristotelian slumbers.Western rhetoric was never univocal in its theory or practice of ethos: the essaysin this collection provide proof of this. The contributors aimed to shake rhetoricout of its Eurocentrism: the traditions of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia sustaintheir own models of ethos and lead us to reconsider rhetoric in its richvariety—what ethos was, is, and will become. This collection is groundbreakingin its attempt to outline the diversity of argument, trust, and authority beyonda singular, dominant perspective. This collection offers readers a choice of itineraries: thematic, geographic, andhistorical. Essays may be read individually or cumulatively, as exercises incomparative rhetoric. In taking a world perspective, Histories of Ethos willprove a seminal discussion. Its comparative approach will help readers appreciatethe commonalities and the distinctions in competing cultural-discursivepractices—in what brings us together and what drives us apart as communities.Additionally, it is the editors’ hope that, out of this historical, multiculturaldialogue, some new perspectives on ethos may come forward to broaden ourdiscussion and reach of understanding.

The "decade of darkness" was a tumultuous time for women in Canada's military. A human rights tribunal ordered the military to open combat positions to women and reach full gender integration by 1999. Charlotte Duval-Lantoine looks at failed efforts to accomplish this goal, revealing an organization -and leaders - unwilling and unable to change.

Popular virtue is the first in-depth study of the changing nature of moral politics within working-class Radicalism between 1820 and 1870. Through study of the lives, activism and intellectual influences of a number of key leaders of working-class Radicalism, this book highlights how Radicalism's attitudes to morality and everyday life shifted from a festive and libertarian culture that advocated sexual liberty and gender equality in the 1820s-30s to a more austere and ascetic politics that emphasized moral improvement, temperance and frugality after the 1840s. Despite the fracturing of this culture with the decline of Chartism in the 1850s, Popular virtue highlights how the moral politics of the 1840s possessed important legacies in not only the politics of Popular Liberalism and the Reform League but also in heterodox medicine and self-help.
