"Over the last few years, social media has expanded to become a key platform for news dissemination and circulation. Nations, governments, organisations and societies are now coming to terms with the unpredictable and debilitating consequences of fake news. The propagation of fake news has been linked to an increase in measles cases, surges in youth crimes, the spread of pseudo-science, compromised national security, and more. Some even perceive it as a global threat to democratic systems around the world. In this book, the authors examine factors influencing the spread of fake news, and suggest ways to combat it by exploring the key elements which enable and facilitate this phenomenon"--

Bringing together original contributions from a worldwide group of scholars, this book critically explores the changing role and influence of institutions in the production of news. Drawing from a diverse set of disciplinary and theoretical backgrounds, research paradigms and perspectives, and methodologies, each chapter explores different institutions currently impacting journalism, including government bodies, businesses, technological platforms, and civic organisations. Together they outline how cracks in the autonomy of the journalism industry have allowed for other types of organizations to exert influence over the manner in which journalism is produced, funded, experienced and even conceptualized. Ultimately, this collective work argues for increased research on the impact of outside influences on journalism, while providing a roadmap for future research within journalism studies. The Institutions Changing Journalism is an invaluable contribution to the field of journalism, media, and communication studies, and will be of interest to scholars and practitioners alike who want to stay up to date with fundamental institutional changes facing in the industry.

"Over the past few years, fact-checking has been widely touted as a corrective to the spread of misinformation, disinformation, conspiracy theories, and propaganda through the media. While political fact-checkers focus on the claims of public figures, their editorial counterparts check stories being readied for publication for a wide range of errors, from inaccurate names and dates to false quotations and misleading descriptions and interpretations of data. If journalism is a cornerstone of democracy, says author Brooke Borel, then fact-checking is its building inspector. In this second edition of her guide to the why, what, and how of editorial fact-checking, Borel covers the evolving media landscape, with new guidance on checking audio and video sources, polling data, and sensitive subjects such as trauma and abuse. She has expanded the sections on working with writers, editors, and producers and added new material on getting fact-checking gigs as well as new exercises. And she addresses the challenges of fact-checking in a world where social media, artificial intelligence, and the metaverse are making it increasingly difficult for everyone--including fact-checkers--to identify false information. But the answer, she says, is for everyone to approach information with skepticism--to learn to think like a fact-checker"--

Disinformation and so-called fake news are contemporary phenomena with rich histories. Disinformation, or the willful introduction of false information for the purposes of causing harm, recalls infamous foreign interference operations in national media systems. Outcries over fake news, or dubious stories with the trappings of news, have coincided with the introduction of new media technologies that disrupt the publication, distribution and consumption of news -- from the so-called rumour-mongering broadsheets centuries ago to the blogosphere recently. Designating a news organization as fake, or der Lügenpresse, has a darker history, associated with authoritarian regimes or populist bombast diminishing the reputation of 'elite media' and the value of inconvenient truths. In a series of empirical studies, using digital methods and data journalism, we inquire into the extent to which social media have enabled the penetration of foreign disinformation operations, the widespread publication and spread of dubious content as well as extreme commentators with considerable followings attacking mainstream media as fake
