For several years now, Adam Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759) has been attracting increasing attention. Smith is concerned not only with the question of rational grounds for moral action, but also and above all with moral feelings and a corresponding moral education. Thus his theory offers a promising alternative to the theories of David Hume and Immanuel Kant, which have often been cited in past debates. Working from the moral philosophy of Adam Smith, who is known principally as a political economist, it is possible to develop a many-facetted contribution to present-day debates (liberalism, business ethics). This volume, with papers by renowned moral philosophers and Adam Smith scholars, documents the various perspectives from which Adam Smith's moral philosophy is of particular interest today.

This is a critical bibliography of Adam Smith. It takes as its starting point the Vanderblue Collection of Smithiana held by the Kress Library and its accompanying published catalogue. This bibliography updates the catalogue, which only had a very limited original circulation. The problem with Adam Smith is not one of attribution but the re-shaping of his work by the accompanying commentary and notes or the effect of translation and abridgement. This critical bibliography hopes to bring order to this process. A listing of all editions with details of their salient points gives an overview of the critical work on Smith as a leading member of the Scottish Enlightenment.

Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations has been among the world books for over two hundred years and has gathered a mythology, which does scant justice to the actual book. One reason for this was that the Wealth of Nations was one of a series of studies through which Smith hoped to complete his system of moral, social and natural philosophy.
The Individual in Society illustrates this system, especially in relation to Smith's other major work, The Theory of Moral Sentiments and examines its relation to the Wealth of Nations. Included are:
