This volume aims to apply ontological theories and arguments to theistic beliefs and theistic world views. After an introduction that traces out the complexity of the field by categorizing the multifaceted definitions of ontology and (theistic) believing, thirteen articles discuss specific aspects of the two terms as well as their interaction. With contributions by Chris Daly, Gabriele De Anna, Michał Głowala, Christian Kanzian, Daniel Linford, Jason Megill, Uwe Meixner, Elisa Paganini, Eleonore Stump, Mirosław Szatkowski, William F. Vallicella and Peter van Inwagen.

This book sets out to shed light on what is specific to American Transcendentalism by comparing it with the atheistic vision of German philosophers and theologians like Ludwig Feuerbach and Arthur Schopenhauer. The study argues that atheism was part of the discursive and religious context from which Transcendentalism emerged. Tendencies toward atheism were already inherent in Transcendentalist thought. The atheist scenario came to the surface in the controversy about Emerson’s “new views.” Contemporary critics charged that the deity Emerson worshipped was himself. Emersonian Transcendentalism thus anticipated some of the central concerns in the works of German atheists like Feuerbach. From idealism to atheism seemed but a short step.

The term “new atheism” has been given to the recent barrage of bestselling books written by Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Daniel Dennett, Christopher Hitchens, and others. These books and their authors have had a significant media presence and have only grown in popularity over the years. This book brings together scholars from religious studies, science, sociology of religion, sociology of science, philosophy, and theology to engage the new atheism and place it in the context of broader scholarly discourses. This volume will serve to contextualize and critically examine the claims, arguments and goals of the new atheism so that readers can become more informed of some of the debates with which the new atheists inevitably and, at times unknowingly, engage. Contributors include Richard Harries, Reza Aslan, Amarnath Amarasingam, Robert Platzner, Jeffrey Robbins, Christopher Rodkey, Rory Dickson, Steve Fuller, William Sims Bainbridge, William A. Stahl, Stephen Bullivant, Michael Borer, Richard Cimino, Christopher Smith, Gregory R. Peterson, Jeff Nall, Ryan Falcioni, and Mark Vernon. Studies in Critical Research on Religion , volume 1

Norman Kretzmann expounds and criticises Aquinas' theology of creation, which is natural (or philosophical) in that Aquinas developed it without depending on the data of Scripture.

The author investigates what it means, and whether it is coherent, to say that there is a God, concluding that, despite philosophical objections, the claims which religious believers make about God are generally coherent. Sometimes the words by which this is expressed are used in a stretched sense, but theologians acknowledge the fact.
