Abstract

"Advanced Biosensors for Virus Detection: Smart Diagnostics to Combat Against the SARS-CoV2 Pandemic covers the development of biosensor-based approaches for the diagnosis and prognosis of viral infections, specifically coronaviruses. The book discusses wide-ranging topics of available biosensor-based technologies and their application for early viral detection. Sections cover the emergence of SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV2, the global health response, the impact on affected populations, state-of-the art biomarkers, and risk factors. Specific focus is given to COVID-19, with coverage of genomic profiling, strain variation and the pathogenesis of SARS-CoV2."--

Abstract

"Elgar Research Agendas outline the future of research in a given area. Leading scholars are given the space to explore their subject in provocative ways and map out the potential directions of travel. They are relevant but also visionary. With contributions from leading experts in the fields of anthropology, communications, disaster studies, economics, epidemiology, Indigenous studies, philosophy and sociology, this expansive book offers a diverse range of social science perspectives on the COVID-19 pandemic, providing critical insights into what a research agenda for COVID-19 and society resembles across different fields of study. This timely Research Agenda investigates what the social sciences can contribute to COVID-19 scholarship, exploring topics such as the impact of the pandemic on women and Indigenous Peoples, ideas behind herd immunity, drivers of vaccine diplomacy, magnification of existing inequalities, and the ethics of vaccine passports. Driven by a particular focus on the causes and consequences of the pandemic, the book considers the opportunities that research into COVID-19 presents, including how such disasters might be mitigated, as well as how we might change the world for the better and carry out our own work differently in the future. Drawing upon numerous critical theories and methodological approaches, this incisive Research Agenda will be an invaluable tool for academics across the social sciences, particularly disaster scholars. Graduate and undergraduate students will benefit from its wealth of insightful contributions from experts working in their respective fields"--

Abstract

This book is dedicated to a topic related to the effects of photodynamic therapy organized by Biomedicines in 2022 (https://www.mdpi.com/topics/photodynamic_therapy). In medicine, the use of photodynamic therapy for the treatment of oncological and non-oncological diseases has been widely documented and well codified. In dermatology, the use varies from oncological to the treatment of chronic wounds, as well as in cosmetology for photo-rejuvenation. The 19 manuscripts published in this book cover all aspects of this therapy, including the discovery of new natural and synthetic photosensitizers, biomaterials and nanotechnology, in vitro and in vivo studies, and clinical trials.

Abstract

SARS-CoV-2 has infected more than 105 million people worldwide. During this pandemic, researchers and clinicians have been working to understand the molecular mechanisms that underpin viral pathogenesis by studying viral–host interactions. Now, with the global rollout of various COVID-19 vaccines—based on the neutralization of the spike protein using different technologies—viral immunology and cell-based immunity are being investigated. Researchers are also studying how various SARS-CoV-2 genetic mutations will impact the efficacy of these COVID-19 vaccines. At the same time, various antiviral drugs have been identified or repurposed that have potential as anti-SARS-CoV-2 treatments. BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) is the acronym used to associate five major emerging national economies. The BRICS countries are known for their significant influence on regional affairs, including being leaders in scientific and clinical research and innovation. This Special Issue includes researchers from BRICS countries, in particular South Africa, involved in the study of SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19. Original articles, as well as new perspectives or reviews on the matter, were welcomed. Research in the fields of vaccine studies, pathogenesis, genetic mutations, viral immunology, and antiviral drugs were especially encouraged.

Abstract

"Application of Natural Products in SARS-CoV-2 examines the potential for natural products to treat COVID-19, bringing together the most recent research. SARS-CoV-2 is a novel disease H54 that is still being researched despite being globally prevalent. There are still few proven treatments, so repurposing existing drugs and treatments is essential. While there have been many articles published on the subject, this book is the first to bring together data and research on the topic. It includes information about molecular mechanism, dosage and safety profiles, and an essential resource for all scientists and researchers working to combat SARS-CoV-2."--
