The surprising true story of Mexico's hunt, arrest, and conviction of its first female serial killerFor three years, amid widespread public outrage, police in Mexico City struggled to uncover the identity of the killer responsible for the ghastly deaths of forty elderly women, many of whom had been strangled in their homes with a stethoscope by someone posing as a government nurse. When Juana Barraza Samperio, a female professional wrestler known as la Dama del Silencio (the Lady of Silence), was arrested--and eventually sentenced to 759 years in prison--for her crimes as the Mataviejitas (the little old lady killer), her case disrupted traditional narratives about gender, criminality, and victimhood in the popular and criminological imagination.Marshaling ten years of research, and one of the only interviews that Juana Barraza Samperio has given while in prison, Susana Vargas Cervantes deconstructs this uniquely provocative story. She focuses, in particular, on the complex, gendered aspects of the case, asking: Who is a killer? Barraza--with her "manly" features and strength, her career as a masked wrestler in lucha libre, and her violent crimes--is presented, here, as a study in gender deviance, a disruption of what scholars call mexicanidad, or the masculine notion of what it means to be Mexican. Cervantes also challenges our conception of victimhood--specifically, who "counts" as a victim. The Little Old Lady Killer presents a fascinating analysis of what serial killing--often considered "killing for the pleasure of killing"--represents to us.

Socio-cultural criticism is the continuous assessment and evaluation of developments within democratic society and hence a vital ingredient of democracy itself. Departing from the French Revolution, this study focuses upon a tradition of European criticism. On the whole, critics accepted that technological advance was irreversible but they opposed the assumption that this implied general progress. Instead, they stressed the negatives: class conflict, erosion of tradition, mechanization of life, fragmentation of society, loss of cultural differentiation. The approach is exclusively text-orientated. The result is a multi-coloured mosaic depicting an image of what has moved, confused or dismayed the European mind over a period of a century and a half. The intensity of concern has shaped our contemporary thought, awareness and outlook.

Seven million youngsters have only limited potential for becoming productive adults because they are at high risk for encountering serious problems at home, in school, or in their communities. This is one of the disturbing findings in this overview of what is known about young people aged 10 to 17 growing up in the US today. This text explores four problem areas that are the subject of a great deal of public interest & social concern: delinquency, substance abuse, teen pregnancy, & school failure. In examining these problem areas, Dryfoos has three objectives: to present a more cogent picture of youngsters who are at risk of problem behaviours & where they fit in society; to synthesize the experience of programs that have been successful in changing various aspects of these behaviours; & to propose strategies for using this knowledge base to implement more effective approaches to helping youngsters succeed.
