Abstract

This book is a comprehensive study of visual humour in ancient Greece, with special emphasis on works created in Athens and Boeotia. Alexandre G. Mitchell brings an interdisciplinary approach to this topic, combining theories and methods of art history, archaeology and classics with the anthropology of humour, and thereby establishing new ways of looking at art and visual humour in particular. Understanding what visual humour was to the ancients and how it functioned as a tool of social cohesion is only one facet of this study. Mitchell also focuses on the social truths that his study of humour unveils: democracy and freedom of expression; politics and religion; Greek vases and trends in fashion; market-driven production; proper and improper behaviour; popular versus elite culture; carnival in situ; and the place of women, foreigners, workers and labourers within the Greek city. Richly illustrated with more than 140 drawings and photographs, this study amply documents the comic representations that formed an important part of ancient Greek visual language from the sixth to the fourth centuries BC.

Abstract

Translated literally as 'pictures run riot', manga refers to a form of Japanese narrative art that has grown over the centuries to become a global phenomenon. Initially referring to graphic prints, novels and comics, manga has expanded beyond its original forms to include animation, art, fashion and new media such as film and gaming, and has international reach. Immensely popular with people of all ages, manga is big business, with a turnover of GBP 3 billion in Japan in 2016. Arranged into six broadly chronological, thematic chapters, this book traces the origins of manga, from its beginnings to the present day. Each section opens with an essay, followed by interviews, features and manga selections. The first chapter focuses on understanding manga through reading, drawing and producing. The second explores the power of storytelling, examining manga's presentation of reality through printed formats and subject matter. The third chapter centres on the power of the seen and the unseen worlds. Chapter four shifts the attention from the art form directly to its role in society, starting with manga's grass roots and moving on to fandom, education and the future of manga in an uncertain world. The penultimate chapter highlights the works of sixteen select manga artists, forming a visual timeline of seminal works. The final chapter examines manga's expanding boundaries, including the avant-garde, media crossover and manga's growing international reach and influence. 0ffering a revealing insight into the world of manga, this book will appeal to manga fans and to all those interested in graphic art, in all its forms. Exhibition: British Museum, London, UK (23.05.-26.08.2019).

Abstract

Early Japanese popular culture, in the form of the coloured woodcuts of artists like Hokusai and Kuniyoshi, achieved world fame after Japan's opening. The pop culture of today, from manga to anime, has also conquered the globe. Now the sheets and books of woodcuts by the most famous renowned ukiyo-e artists confront the visual mass media in the comics and cartoons of modern Japan. The high-quality Japanese woodcuts and graphic novels from the 17th to the 19th centuries are products of an urban popular culture in pre-modern Japan, in which clothing, stage stars, myths, monsters, sexuality and commerce were the governing factors. The publication shows the enchanting imagery of both historical and contemporary pop culture in Japan, which today focuses on manga and anime. Short texts spotlight the art of the woodcut in the Edo period, such as the famous shunga sheets, together with selected excerpts from manga, including those by Jiro Taniguchi and Inio Asano as well as the current developments in the manga phenomenon in the Japan of the 21st century. Exhibition: Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg, Germany (10.06.-11.09.2016). "Following the opening of Japan, its early popular culture with colour woodcuts by the likes of Hokusai and Kuniyoshi has achieved worldwide fame. And with manga and anime, Japan's contemporary pop culture has also conquered the world. Woodcuts and woodblock printed books by famous ukiyo-e artists meet up with mass media comics and animated films from modern Japan"--

Abstract
