Originally published in 1934, Modern Housing is widely acknowledged as one of the most important books on housing of the twentieth century, introducing the latest developments in European modernist housing to an American audience. It is also a manifesto: America needs to draw on Europe’s example to solve its housing crisis. Only when housing is transformed into a planned, public amenity will it truly be modern. Modern Housing’s sharp message catalyzed an intense period of housing activism in the United States, resulting in the Housing Act of 1937, which Catherine Bauer coauthored. But these reforms never went far enough: so long as housing remained the subject of capitalist speculation, Bauer knew the housing problem would remain. In light of today’s affordable housing emergency, her prescriptions for how to achieve humane and dignified modern housing remain as instructive and urgent as ever.

Five experiments made by prestigious architects on their own homes during the dark days of the Second World War.In most books or manuals on the history of modern architecture we found a large number of pages devoted to the avant-garde movement that took place in-between wars and to the reconstruction and expansion after World War II. Therebetween, as a misunderstanding or an agreed silence, is a big gap of dark years, wars and exiles of which you can hardly speak about. It is precisely in those dark years when the most experimental and inspiring projects had place. Architects and artists relegated to the margins of civil reality began to present a picture of reactions to a cultural situation unsustainable. Francisco González de Canales analyzes a constellation of scattered cases between late thirties and late fifties of the twentieth century he calls domestic self-experimentation.

Most of the residential buildings in Europe were built between 1945 and 1975. Within this short phase of just 30 years, the stock was not only renewed, but also significantly expanded. The public sector has a special role to play here. Thus, the state and the institutions involved had to eliminate the existing housing shortage and at the same time had the unique opportunity to realize their political ideals. The publication shows for the first time how a fundamental renovation of living and its architectural implementation could succeed against this background. The comparison of individual projects makes it clear which superordinate topics the residential buildings negotiate and how local issues find their way into the architecture. The study is based on seventy selected settlements and buildings from seven European cities. Shown are projects from Brussels, Zagreb, Cologne, Oslo, Porto, Lyon and Athens.

In 1968, the first Interieur Design Biennale in Kortrijk marked a point in time when the home was the main site not only of investigation, but for potential social change in the work of architects and designers. Yet the domestic realm progressively disappeared from the agenda over the subsequent decades, in parallel with the increasing marketization of real estate. As the financial crisis of 2008 made visible, homeowner-ship became one more financial instrument to generate revenue - at the same time excluding the younger generations from the property market for the foreseeable future. The square meter can be regarded as the basic unit of a new condition of unstable domesticity. The extent of individual movements, new social patterns, and different family models are all reshaping the very objects that surround us. Yet, this change has gone largely uncharted.By mapping the multiple fluctuations and meanings of one square meter, this project explores how global forces are transforming the scale of the home, from the urban scale down to furniture elements. 'SQM' will draw on contributions from architects, designers, artists, and theorists, in order to bring the space of the domestic interior back into the debate. The way we live is rapidly changing under pressure from multiple forces—financial, environmental, technological, geopolitical. What we used to call home may not even exist anymore, having transmuted into a financial commodity of which the square meter is the basic unit. Yet, domesticity and the domestic space ceased long ago to be present in the architectural agenda.SQM, produced for the 2014 Biennale Interieur in Kortrijk, Belgium, charts the scale of this change using data, fiction, and a critical selection of homes and their interiors—from Osama bin Laden’s compound to apartment living in the age of Airbnb. With original texts by:Rahel Aima, Aristide Antonas, Gabrielle Brainard and Jacob Reidel, Keller Easterling, Ignacio González Galán, Joseph Grima, Hilde Heynen, Dan Hill, Sam Jacob, Alexandra Lange, Justin McGuirk, Joanne McNeil, Alessandro Mendini, Jonathan Olivares, Marina Otero Verzier, Beatriz Preciado, Anna Puigjaner, Catharine Rossi, Andreas Ruby, Malkit Shoshan, Bruce Sterling

Bilingual edition (English/German) / Zweisprachige Ausgabe (deutsch/englisch) Experimental dwelling forms—CoHousing Cultures—are entering the mainstream. But to what extent are they accessible and affordable for all, including people with more or less money, with or without refugee experience, with or without disabilities? Community- led housing initiatives are already developing diverse, sustainable neighborhoods, driven by civil society and increasingly supported by foundations, cooperatives and municipalities as well as housing companies and developers. This book contains critical reviews of model projects representing a multifaceted European movement, complemented with photos and drawings. Short texts argue how political and financial conditions can be improved to better realize community housing. Finally, a range of voices offer unconventional and promising strategies.

The book tells the story of communal living from about 1850 until today. Three motives of sharing - the economic, political and social intention - divide the residential objects, which are investigated in a historical analysis and allocated to nine development phases. The author investigates and compares different forms of housing and the way they developed from their origins until today; she illustrates how everyday shared living and the degrees of privacy in housing are practiced in Europe. Owing to its comprehensive documentation, the analysis of typologies, layout plans, and user and expert interviews, the book can also be considered to be a lexicon or handbook on communal living. A detailed overview that is unique in this form.
