Abstract

Abstract

In this book, Richard W. Bulliet focuses on three major phases in the evolution of the wheel and their relationship to the needs and ambitions of human society. He begins in 4000 B.C.E. with the first wheels affixed to axles. He then follows with the innovation of wheels turning independently on their axles and concludes five thousand years later with the caster, a single rotating and pivoting wheel.Bulliet's most interesting finding is that a simple desire to move things from place to place did not drive the wheel's development. If that were the case, the wheel could have been invented at any time almost anywhere in the world. By dividing the history of this technology into three conceptual phases and focusing on the specific men, women, and societies that brought it about, Bulliet expands the social, economic, and political significance of a tool we only partially understand. He underscores the role of gender, combat, and competition in the design and manufacture of wheels, adding vivid imagery to illustrate each stage of their development.

Abstract

Many of the engineering problems of particular importance to railways arise at interfaces and the safety-critical role of the wheel/rail interface is widely acknowledged. Better understanding of wheel/rail interfaces is therefore critical to improving the capacity, reliability and safety of the railway system. Wheel-rail interface handbook is a one-stop reference for railway engineering practitioners and academic researchers. Part one provides the fundamentals of contact mechanics, wear, fatigue and lubrication as well as state-of-the-art research and emerging technologies related to the wheel/rail interface and its management. Part two offers an overview of industrial practice from several different regions of the world, thereby providing an invaluable international perspective with practitioners' experience of managing the wheel/rail interface in a variety of environments and circumstances. This comprehensive volume will enable practising railway engineers, in whatever discipline of railway engineering - infrastructure, vehicle design and safety, and so on - to enhance their understanding of wheel/rail issues, which have a major influence on the running of a reliable, efficient and safe railway. One-stop reference on the important topic of wheel rail-interfaces Presents the fundamentals of contact mechanics, wear, fatigue and lubrication Examines state-of-the-art research and emerging technologies related to wheel-rail interface and its management

Abstract

This book presents papers from the International Gear Conference 2014, held in Lyon, 26th-28th August 2014. Mechanical transmission components such as gears, rolling element bearings, CVTs, belts and chains are present in every industrial sector and over recent years, increasing competitive pressure and environmental concerns have provided an impetus for cleaner, more efficient and quieter units. Moreover, the emergence of relatively new applications such as wind turbines, hybrid transmissions and jet engines has led to even more severe constraints. The main objective of this conference is to

Abstract

This work presents investigates the feasibility of the ""directly steered wheels (DSW)"" under operating condition of tramcars. After analyzing the wheel/rail geometric contact between track and DSW, a mathematical model has been developed to describe the lateral dynamics. Based on this model, a robust guidance controller is designed according to the µ-synthesis. The results of simulations show that the DSW with the designed controller can improve the running performance of tramcars significantly.

Abstract

This specialist edition features key innovations in the science and engineering of new grinding processes, abrasives, tools, machines, and systems for a range of important industrial applications. Topics written by invited, internationally recognized authors review the advances and present results of research over a range of well-known grinding processes. A significant introductory review chapter explores innovations to achieve high productivity and very high precision in grinding. The reviewed applications range from grinding systems for very large lenses and reflectors, through to medium size grinding machine processes, and down to grinding very small components used in MEMS . Early research chapters explore the influence of grinding wheel topography on surface integrity and wheel wear. A novel chapter on abrasive processes also addresses the finishing of parts produced by additive manufacturing through mass finishing. Materials to be ground range from conventional engineering steels to aerospace materials, ceramics, and composites. The research findings highlight important new results for avoiding material sub-surface damage. The papers compiled in this book include references to many source publications which will be found invaluable for further research, such as new features introduced into control systems to improve process efficiency. The papers also reflect significant improvements and research findings relating to many aspects of grinding processes, including machines, materials, abrasives, wheel preparation, coolants, lubricants, and fluid delivery. Finally, a definitive chapter summarizes the optimal settings for high precision and the achievement of centerless grinding stability.
