Abstract

Taekwondo, according to World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) has two official competitive disciplines, poomsae and kyorugi (technique and sport combat). Still, there is an insufficient number of studies which considered differences, or similarities between poomsae and kyorugi athletes. Aim of this investigation is to determine the possible difference between samples of taekwondo competitors in terms of somatotype and anthropometric measures. Sample of this research is composed of n=39 taekwondo competitors of cadet, junior and senior age, divided into two subsamples, kyorugi (n=27) and poomsae (n=12). Ten competitors are the current national champions, while one participant is the European champion. After statistical analysis was conducted between subsamples, somatotype values were turned out to be significantly different. Somatotype of observed kyorugi competitors is composed of endo- 2.55 ± 1.17, meso- 3.66 ± 0.81 and ecto-4.09 ± 1.22, while mean values of poomsae sample are endo- 4.21 ± 0.70, meso- 4.25 ± 0.61 and ecto- 2.69 ± 0.74. According to success at national championship, female kyorugi national champions tend to be balanced ectomorfs, males to be ectomesomorphs, while poomsae champions tend to be endomesomorphs with tendency toward centre. Authors suggest that such results were expected due to their different training programs and competition requirements. Future research should include especially male competitors, greater samples and should be conducted on the international level competitors.

Abstract

"For approximately six years, conversations about social science research and social science topics have aired weekly on public radio station WNCU on a show called The Measure of Everyday Life. That endeavor has generated roughly 250 episodes, each a rich conversation with interviewees on a wide range of topics. This volume builds on that experience to offer an exploration of the process of social science research: from idea conceptualization and question generation to the personal and ethical challenges that researchers often encounter. The book presents a selection of those conversations as well as reflection on insights from both the experiences of interviewing people regarding social science work for six years and from the process of implementing interdisciplinary discussions of research, as is often done in university student honors programs. The book captures compelling conversations about the practice of research and offers introductory university and college seminars an overview of how social science projects come to be, what they sometimes accomplish, and what future questions remain for inquiry regarding a variety of topics relevant to everyday life"--

Abstract

Abstract

"An Introduction to Fuzzy Sets provides a comparison of the quality of life in urban, intermediate and rural NUTS III regions in Portugal, with the main goal of identifying and analysing the necessary and conditions for a high quality of life in those different regions. The authors assess the necessary and sufficient conditions for higher Human Development Index levels, aiming to determine whether the same pattern could be used to explain the happiness index. In order to represent the applications of fuzzy set theory as well as neuro-fuzzy in industry, a literature review of these topics is carried out. As some researchers have efficiently utilized fuzzy logic and neuro-fuzzy, in-depth discussions are provided for stimulating future investigations. Following this, using the L. Zadeh theory of fuzzy sets, the authors consider all types of uncertainties in oil fields and oil production to make a decision as to what model is best in such a fuzzy environment. Additionally, several challenges are explored, such as: the fuzzy random finite difference numerical method, possibilistic uncertainty modeling, and the development of a fuzzy Wilks' theorem to model the hybrid structure of randomness and fuzziness modeling. In closing, a standard fuzzy arithmetic method is used for solving fuzzy equations, as well as for the optimization of fuzzy objectives. The fuzzy variable of the equation is fuzzified using a fuzzy set"--

Abstract

"How do we live well? The first sentence of Grace and Gravity raises the fundamental question that constantly occupies our minds-and of all those who lived before us. Paradoxically, the impossibility of answering this question opens up the very room needed to find ways of living well. It is the gap where all disciplines fall short, where architecture does not fit its inhabitants, where economy is not based on shortage, where religion cannot be explained by its followers, and where technology works far beyond its own principles. According to Lars Spuybroek, the prize-winning former architect, this marks the point where the ?paradoxical machine? of grace reveals its powers, a point where we ?cannot say if we are moving or being moved?. Following the trail of grace leads him to a new form of analysis that transcends the age-old opposition between appearances and technology. Linking up a dazzling and often delightful variety of sources-monkeys, paintings, lamp posts, octopuses, tattoos, bleeding fingers, rose windows, robots, smart phones, spirits, saints, and fossils-with profound meditations on living, death, consciousness, and existence, Grace and Gravity offers an eye-opening provocation to a wide range of art historians, architects, theologians, anthropologists, artists, media theorists and philosophers."--

Abstract

No one can deny the significance attributed to the issue of reconciling work and private life by contemporary society, the EU and other international organisations. Its relevance is evident in the multifaceted nature of this topic and the need for each party to the employment contract to strike a proper balance between professional and personal responsibilities, based on the assumption that people can successfully harmonise their work with life. Following on from these considerations, this volume provides a detailed analysis of work-life balance and its regulation in a number of EU countries,

Abstract

Since the last decades of the 20th century, there have been an increasing attention on the ageing of population and on the need to develop specific interventions aiming to promote wellbeing and quality of life of ageing individuals (Petretto et al., 2016, 2017, 2018, Pili and Petretto, 2019). World Health Organization (WHO) considered the development of those interventions as a priority and asked countries to create a research and intervention agenda with a focus on the promotion of healthy and active ageing. According to a biopsychosocial approach, WHO defined some pillars at the base of healthy and active ageing. Moreover, WHO focused their attention on eating and healthy lifestyles as ways to promote wellbeing and longevity (WHO, 2002, WHO, 2012, Paul et al., 2012). There are increasing research findings in this field, also by cross-national comparisons and by the development of intervention models aimed to prevent "not-communicable disorders" and to promote wellbeing.
