Abstract

Acclaimed national researcher Hu Angang presents Mao and the Cultural Revolution, an immensely rich account of the massive political event of 1966–1976 that brought seismic changes to the landscape of New China. A culmination of Mao Zedong`s political ambitions, the Cultural Revolution restored his power and prestige as paramount leader, albeit at great costs to the economic and social development to the country. The impact of the movement — more significantly, the politics that drove it — deeply influences political philosophy in China today. Hu Angang`s work provides a unique perspective and objective assessment of the progression of the Cultural Revolution, focusing on the intraparty politics, the Politburo`s international outlook, and the political thought of the Chinese leadership that shaped this pivotal decade.

Abstract

"Foreigners under Mao: Western Lives in China, 1949-1976 is a pioneering study of the Western community during the turbulent Mao era. Based largely on personal interviews, memoirs, private letters, and archives, this book 'gives a voice' to the Westerners who lived under Mao. It shows that China was not as closed to Western residents as has often been portrayed. The book examines the lives of six different groups of Westerners: 'foreign comrades' who made their home in Mao's China, twenty-two former Korean War POWs who controversially chose China ahead of repatriation, diplomats of Western countries that recognized the People's Republic, the few foreign correspondents permitted to work in China, 'foreign experts', and language students. Each of these groups led distinct lives under Mao, while sharing the experience of a highly politicized society and of official measures to isolate them from everyday China." -- Publisher's description

Abstract

Why do leaders sometimes challenge, rather than accept, the international structures that surround their states? In The International Ambitions of Mao and Nehru, Andrew Kennedy answers this question through in-depth studies of Chinese foreign policy under Mao Zedong and Indian foreign policy under Jawaharlal Nehru. Drawing on international relations theory and psychological research, Kennedy offers a new theoretical explanation for bold leadership in foreign policy, one that stresses the beliefs that leaders develop about the 'national efficacy' of their states. He shows how this approach illuminates several of Mao and Nehru's most important military and diplomatic decisions, drawing on archival evidence and primary source materials from China, India, the United States and the United Kingdom. A rare blend of theoretical innovation and historical scholarship, The International Ambitions of Mao and Nehru is a fascinating portrait of how foreign policy decisions are made.

Abstract

This study traces the development of Mao's political thinking from his earliest writings to the beginning of the Long March. In a thorough examination of the early years, the author delineates Mao's distinctive perspectives, political concerns, and leadership style-the enduring components of his political identity. The analysis goes to the roots of Mao's thinking-the crucible of action-in order to demonstrate the fundamental unity of theory and practice which constituted the leading principle of Mao's thought, an approach to politics that was a major innovation within both the Chinese and Marxist political traditions.

Abstract

"Mao Zedong's political career spanned more than half a century. The ideas he championed transformed one of the largest nations on earth and inspired revolutionary movements across the world. Even today, Mao lives on in China, where he is regarded by many as a nearmythical fi gure, and in the West, where a burgeoning literature continues to debate his memory. In this book, leading scholars from different generations and around the world offer a critical evaluation of the life and legacy of China's most famous - some would say infamous - son. In the first part, chapters explore the historical and political context of Mao's emergence as a young man and revolutionary in the early twentieth century. Through this period it is possible to examine the nature of Mao's ideology in its purest form and to see why it was attractive to so many. This part also chronicles the main events of his life and individual aspects of that life: his key relationships with allies and foes, his followers, and his public persona; his philosophy; and his relationship with women. In the second and fi nal part, chapters debate the positive and negative aspects of his legacy. In China, Mao has become a metaphor for the promises and betrayals of the twentieth century; in developing countries, he remains a beacon of revolutionary hope for some; and in the West, Mao continues to be the mirror of our hopes and fears. This book brings the scholarship on Mao up to date, and its alternative perspectives equip readers to assess for themselves the nature of this mercurial figure and his significance in modern Chinese history. Abstract

Mao Zedong, leader of the revolution and absolute chairman of the People's Republic of China, was also a calligrapher and a poet of extraordinary grace and eloquent simplicity. The poems in this beautiful edition (from the 1963 Beijing edition), translated and introduced by Willis Barnstone, are expressions of decades of struggle, the painful loss of his first wife, his hope for a new China, and his ultimate victory over the Nationalist forces. Willis Barnstone's introduction, his short biography of Mao and brief history of the revolution, and his notes on Chinese versification all combine to enrich the Western reader's understanding of Mao's poetry.

Abstract

Dragon in Ambush opens up Mao Zedong's poems to a radically new interpretation as the corpus of his political ideology to reveal his grand design for total domination of the Communist Party and of China itself. Mao laid out his poems in a systematic and carefully schematized blueprint to assure that his ideas and aims would be followed long after his own lifetime. This work is indispensable in understanding Mao's thinking and his relationship to the People's Republic of China.
