Josep Lluís Mateo is one of Spain’s leading architects and one of Europe’s most influential architectural intellectuals. He runs a firm called mateoarquitectura in Barcelona, which has designed buildings in many countries across Europe. Alongside his work as guest lecturer, Mateo was professor of design at the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zürich from 2002 to 2014. Mateo’s standing as a pacesetter in the international intellectual discourse about the future of architecture is closely tied to the journal Quaderns d’Arquitectura i Urbanisme, which has appeared in Catalan, Spanish, and English since 1985 and of which he was editor in chief from 2002 to 2014. Under Mateo, it developed into the leading platform for discussions on architectural issues, urban design, and aesthetic concepts.

While he was working to complete the Allmannajuvet Zinc Mine Museum in southern Norway in 2016, Swiss architect Peter Zumthor asked Norwegian architectural historian Mari Lending to engage in a dialogue about the project. In meandering, impressionistic style, and drawing on their favorite writers, such as Johann Peter Hebel, Stendhal, Nabokov, and T. S. Eliot, their exchanges explore how history, time, and temporalities reverberate across Zumthor's oeuvre. Looking back, Zumthor ponders on how a feeling of history has informed his attempts at emotional reconstruction by means of building, from architectural interventions in dramatic landscapes to his design for the redevelopment of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, which conceived the building on a suitably grand urban scale. This book records the conversation between Zumthor and Lending.

Between 1973 and 1975, Alison and Peter Smithson, published a series of seven articles in Architectural Design questioning the unity of the architectural form, as well as their commitment as architects. In recognition of the inevitable cultural fragmentation of society, they question the collective dimension of their work and their relationship with the community.

A principal of the London-based architecture firm Caruso St. John, "Gritty Brit" Adam Caruso has been writing intensively since the mid-1990s. His essays, published in The Architect's Journal, OASE, Blueprint and Tate, focus on architectural practice outside the tradition of Modernism. Some of Caruso's key writings, gathered here, include "Sigurd Lewerentz and a Material Basis for Form" (1997) , "The Tyranny of the New" (1998) and "The Emotional City" (2000). Adam Caruso was born in 1962 and studied architecture at McGill University, Montreal. He and Peter St. John worked for Florian Beigel and Arup Associates prior to establishing their practice in 1990. For many years they have taught internationally--for example at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design in 2005. Recent London projects include Gagosian Gallery, Britannia Street and the refurbishment of the Barbican Concert Hall. Caruso St. John is currently working with Tate Britain to modernize the gallery's master plan.

This book brings together essays and several recently completed buildings by David Adjaye, in the United States and elsewhere. In the essays, Adjaye shows how his approach to the design of temporary pavilions and furniture, private houses, and installations at the 2015 Venice Biennale feeds into his designs for public buildings. Other essays discuss his engagement with geography, the urban environment, his approach to materiality, and architectural types. The presented projects include two public libraries and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, all in Washington D.C., a residential mixed-use building in New York, and a hybrid art-retail building in Beirut. Two of Adjaye's current projects are also included.
