We recognise Mario Botta's buildings for their strong presence. His architecture is not ephemeral. It shapes the mass firmly and precisely. It touches the ground with self-reliance. A building by Mario Botta is an autonomous object. It comprises an ordered world of its own make. It is standing in dialogue with the urban tissue, but it establishes its own order as if it aims at differentiation instead of integration. Architectural order represents the core of his personal idiom. It is a well structured, compositional order which organises everything into a whole, as an underlying thread that connects and brings together houses on the mountains to museums and churches, banks and commercial buildings to buildings on the ground and buildings underground, different buildings at different places in time. The themes that underlie Mario Botta's architecture are ties that connect and spines that support, common threads that bind one building to the next. His architecture is one of mass. It is then of no surprise that mass is the first thing to be defined and ordered, in his creative process. The volume of his buildings is mostly composed by one or more primary solids.

Proposes another set of terms and structures to talk about architecture, without requiring that it be interesting. This book explores a set of alternatives to the interesting and imagines how architecture might be positioned more broadly in the world using these other terms. The alternatives presented here are labelled as boring, confusing, and comforting. Along with interesting, these three terms make up the four chapters of the book. Each chapter introduces its topic through an analysis of a different image, which serves to unpack the specific character of each term and its relationship to architecture. In addition to text, the book contains over 50 case studies using 100 drawings and images. These are presented in parallel to the text and show what architecture may look like through the lens of these other terms.

A systemic transformation is underway in architectural design, engineering and construction. The discipline and profession of architecture is being reshaped in a moment where information, insight and predictions generated during the design process move into construction no longer essentially via drawings. Other, more profound digital techniques yield fundamentally different workflows, responsibilities and business models for architects. This book offers a comprehensive framework, detailed analysis and critical assessment of the challenges and opportunities inherent in those changes. The author sets out to provide direction for a new era in architectural creation that can be understood and managed by a profession which must become better equipped to direct its future.

Dominique Perrault is one of the most important figures of contemporary French architecture. Many works around the world carry his name, including the Bibliotheque Nationale de France in Paris, the Velodrome and the Olympic swimming pool in Berlin and the Ewha University campus in Seoul. The book explores the design process by researching the experimental foundations that are the source of a series of works designed or partially built.

This is a book that shows how to "see" structures as being integral to architecture. It engages a subject that is both about understanding the mechanical aspects of structure as well as being able to relate this to the space, form, and conceptual design ideas that are inherent to the art of building.Analyzing the structural principles behind many of the best-known works of architecture from past and present alike, this book places the subject within a contemporary context. The subject matter is approached in a qualitative and discursive manner, illustrated by many photographs and structural behavior diagrams. Accessible mathematical equations and worked-out examples are also included so as to deepen a fundamental understanding of the topic. This new, color edition’s format has been thoroughly revised and its content updated and expanded throughout. It is perfect as either an introductory structures course text or as a designer’s sourcebook for inspiration, for here two essential questions are addressed in parallel fashion: “How do structures work?” and “What form do structures take in the context of architecture – and why so?” A rich, varied and engaging rationale for structural form in architecture thus emerges.

The task of design is to integrate functional requirements, contextual conditions and technological means into the creation of a work of architectural culture. After twenty years of practice, a team involving Ignacio Dahl Rocha, Kenneth Ross, Christian Leibbrand, Manuela Toscan and others of the Lausanne-based Swiss office of Richter ∙ Dahl Rocha & Associés has undertaken to formulate the knowledge behind their architectural practice in a comprehensive manual. Covering the full span from initial design, building typology, technology to the cooperation with other professions in four extensive sections, this book conveys the concepts, methods and details that constitute the tools of state-of-the-art architectural projects. The material used is completely first-hand, with the technical drawings redrawn to this purpose, coming from projects like the much-acclaimed integral renovation of Nestlé Headquarters, from residential, office and healthcare buildings to the groundbreaking Swiss Tech Convention Center on the Lausanne Polytechnic Campus. Written with the editorial collaboration of Denise Bratton, this book sets new standards for architectural publications as tools for design.
