Abstract

As the second volume of the collection Violence, security and social issues, this book presents a series of recent ethnographic studies on the prison establishments of the Prison Service of the Province of Buenos Aires (Servicio Penitenciario Bonaerense, SPB). In line with the initial proposal of this first series of the collection, this set of articles have their origin in the most prominent final papers for the Bachelor's degree in Sociology from the National University of La Plata (Universidad Nacional de La Plata, UNLP), which have been discussed within the framework of the Center for Security Studies in the Province of Buenos Aires (Núcleo de Estudios sobre Seguridad en la provincia de Buenos Aires, NESBA), a group formed around the sustained participation in various research projects at the School of Humanities and Education Sciences in UNLP. These studies share an interest in analyzing the social relations developed inside prison establishments, as well as those that connect the inhabitants of these institutions with other actors and spaces of the rest of society.

Abstract

Southern Zone. Warps of Popular Collective Action in Greater Buenos Aires (1974–1989): Popular politics, in its intricate folds and retreats, builds spaces and spreads its sediments. This book seeks to unravel the warp and woof of popular collective action in the southern zone of Greater Buenos Aires between 1974 and 1989. The unearthing of the contentious life of popular classes and a detailed reconstruction of the episodes that mark it will allow readers to go through a spatio-temporal weave in which territories and senses of place are created and recreated. Thus, the place emerges as an intrinsic part of the socio-historical processes, as a factor that intervenes in the dynamics of struggle, and as its provisional result. Situated at a threshold of social, economic and political changes in Argentina, the episodes narrated here, based on documentary archives and memorial records, describe a historical geography of popular struggles in a crucial period of Argentina’s recent history.

Abstract

Following World War II, German antifascists and nationalists in Buenos Aires believed theater was crucial to their highly politicized efforts at community-building, and each population devoted considerable resources to competing against its rival onstage. Competing Germanies tracks the paths of several stage actors from European theaters to Buenos Aires and explores how two of Argentina's most influential immigrant groups, German nationalists and antifascists (Jewish and non-Jewish), clashed on the city's stages. Covered widely in German- and Spanish-language media, theatrical performances articulated strident Nazi, antifascist, and Zionist platforms. Meanwhile, as their thespian representatives grappled onstage for political leverage among emigrants and Argentines, behind the curtain, conflicts simmered within partisan institutions and among theatergoers. Publicly they projected unity, but offstage nationalist, antifascist, and Zionist populations were rife with infighting on issues of political allegiance, cultural identity and, especially, integration with their Argentine hosts.Competing Germanies reveals interchange and even mimicry between antifascist and nationalist German cultural institutions. Furthermore, performances at both theaters also fit into contemporary invocations of diasporas, including taboos and postponements of return to the native country, connections among multiple communities, and forms of longing, memory, and (dis)identification. Sharply divergent at first glance, their shared condition as cultural institutions of emigrant populations caused the antifascist Free German Stage and the nationalist German Theater to adopt parallel tactics in community-building, intercultural relationships, and dramatic performance. Its cross-cultural, polyglot blend of German, Jewish, and Latin American studies gives Competing Germanies a wide, interdisciplinary academic appeal and offers a novel intervention in Exile studies through the lens of theater, in which both victims of Nazism and its adherents remain in focus.

Abstract

This book is a political history of economic life. Through a description of the convulsions of long-term change from colony to republic in Buenos Aires, Republic of Capital explores Atlantic world transformations in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Tracing the transition from colonial Natural Law to instrumental legal understandings of property, the book shows that the developments of constitutionalism and property law were more than coincidences: the polity shaped the rituals and practices arbitrating economic justice, while the crisis of property animated the support for a centralized and executive-dominated state. In dialectical fashion, politics shaped private law while the effort to formalize the domain of property directed the course of political struggles. In studying the legal and political foundations of Argentine capitalism, the author shows how merchants and capitalists coped with massive political upheaval and how political writers and intellectuals sought to forge a model of liberal republicanism. Among the topics examined are the transformation of commercial law, the evolution of liberal political credos, and the saga of political and constitutional turmoil after the collapse of Spanish authority. By the end of the nineteenth century, statemakers, capitalists, and liberal intellectuals settled on a model of political economy that aimed for open markets but closed the polity to widespread participation. The author concludes by exploring the long-term consequences of nineteenth-century statehood for the following century's efforts to promote sustained economic growth and democratize the political arena, and argues that many of Argentina's recent problems can be traced back to the framework and foundations of Argentine statehood in the nineteenth century.

Abstract

Looking beneath the surface of seemingly ordinary social interactions, The Moral Power of Money investigates the forces of power and morality at play, particularly among the poor. Drawing on fieldwork in a slum of Buenos Aires, Ariel Wilkis argues that money is a critical symbol used to negotiate not only material possessions, but also the political, economic, class, gender, and generational bonds between people. Through vivid accounts of the stark realities of life in Villa Olimpia, Wilkis highlights the interplay of money, morality, and power. Drawing out the theoretical implications of these stories, he proposes a new concept of moral capital based on different kinds, or "pieces," of money. Each chapter covers a different "piece"—money earned from the informal and illegal economies, money lent through family and market relations, money donated with conditional cash transfers, political money that binds politicians and their supporters, sacrificed money offered to the church, and safeguarded money used to support people facing hardships. This book builds an original theory of the moral sociology of money, providing the tools for understanding the role money plays in social life today.
