Abstract

"Book is a biography of the classical music conductor and composer Héctor Panizza (1875-1967). He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and spent his career there and in Italy and throughout Europe and the U.S. His name in Italian was Ettore Panizza. Abstract

This book encompasses a profound meditation on the twentieth-century fortunes of historicism as a philosophical model. After a reconstruction of its decline (as a unified and compact philosophical "ism" and as the direct heir of idealism, especially in Italy) and of its persistence as a philosophical style, the volume then penetrates the frontier of the neo-historicisms, probing two of their European faces in the shape of José Ortega y Gasset and Theodor W. Adorno. It then goes on to develop various Italian paths: from Fazio-Allmayer to Garin (and his school) from Dal Pra to Massolo, and up to Preti (was he really an "anti-historicist"?). In all these paths the centrality of historicism and its post-metaphysical aspect are clearly focused, as also in the case of the School of Naples, which now represents the most outstanding and significant heir to such critical (and open) neo-historicism.

Abstract

This first critical biography of Arturo Islas (19381991) brings to life the complex and overlapping worlds inhabited by the gay Chicano poet, novelist, scholar, and professor. Gracefully written and deeply researched, Dancing with Ghosts considers both the larger questions of Islas's life-his sexuality, racial identification, and political personality-and the events of his everyday existence, from his childhood in the borderlands of El Paso to his adulthood in San Francisco and at Stanford University. Frederick Aldama portrays the many facets of Islas's engaging and often contradictory personality. He also explores Islas's coming into the craft of poetry and fiction-his extraordinary struggle to publish his novels, The Rain God, La Mollie and the King of Tears, and Migrant Souls-as well as his pivotal role in paving the way for a new generation of Chicano/a scholars and writers. Through a skillful interweaving of life history, criticism, and literary theory, Aldama paints an unusually rich and wide-ranging portrait of both the man and the eventful times in which he lived. He describes Islas's struggle with polio as a child, his near-death experience and ileostomy as a thirty-year-old beginning to explore his queer sexuality in San Francisco in the 1970's, and his fatal struggle with AIDS in the late 1980's. Drawing from hundreds of unpublished letters, lecture notes, drafts of essays, novels, and poetry archived at Stanford University, Aldama also deals frankly with the controversies that swirled around Islas's impassioned love life, his drug addictions, and his scholarly and professional career as one of the first Chicano/a professors in the United States. He discusses the importance of Islas's pioneering role in bridging Anglo, Latin American, Chicano/a, and European storytelling styles and voices. Dancing with Ghosts succeeds brilliantly both as an account of a fascinating life that embraced many different worlds and as a chronicle of the grand historical shifts that transformed the late-twentieth-century American cultural landscape.

Abstract

Covers the philosophical and literary underpinnings of Wagner's and Schopenhauer's story. This work explores Schopenhauer's metaphysics and Gottfried van Strassburg's Tristan poem. It turns to the events in the opera, providing tonal and harmonic analyses to reinforce its interpretation of the drama. It also creates an account of Ristan.

Abstract

"In seven chapters, Craft argues for a new, generic recognition for what used to be known as 'political novels.' Discussion is generally convincing, well-researched, and occasionally revealing. The first two chapters and their conclusions are similar to accepted scholarly arguments. Craft is at her best when analyzing works by Claribel Alegría, Manlio Argueta, and Belli, in that order. More attention could have been given to Sergio Ramírez's development, which does not fit into the author's thesis, and to Rigoberto Menchú. A noteworthy error: Monterroso never wrote a book titled 'Mr. Taylor & Co.' (the actual title story is from the 1950s). The title refers to a Cuban selection of his stories"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.

Abstract

This book presents a broad and deep symbolic reading of the characters involved in the mythical Holy Grail. The author makes several correlations between symbolic readings of the text and the subjective nature of the mythic psyche and personality development today. The Grail, Arthur and his Knights is a mythical-symbolic reading and Jungian analysis of the Grail, with its various forms, origins and manifestations. It is also about Arthur and his loyal and faithful knights of the Round Table and its dangerous chair. The Great Wounded Goddess, the Wasted Land, the Old Wise Merlin and his visions of the future are also re-examined. The book describes the archetyal themes of search, freedom, and the dreaming return of Golden Age. The symbolic reading of these themes according to the Analytical Psychology reveals a wealth of ancient wisdom, transforming the myth, in itself deeply fascinating, into a powerful metaphor for how the search of the individuation process works.
