Abstract

A story or picture is worth a thousand words. A story, picture or metaphor can help us crystallise what we need to do next. A phrase such as 'the seed has to die' or 'the light at the end of the tunnel' or 'the risk of not seeing the wood for the trees' can sum up in a poignant way truths that we as leaders need to recognise. As we explore a metaphor, the next steps can become clearer. A metaphor can stimulate our imagination and allow us to think afresh about an issue. Reflecting on a problem using a metaphor can help us unblock our thinking and open up the possibility of new solutions. It can enable us to 'cut to the heart of an issue', clarify situations, provide insights or show us where we are stuck. They enable us to face the reality that we need to abandon a project, make a fresh start or change direction. Metaphors can be used in coaching conversations and lead to creative and stimulating dialogue. The metaphors featured are drawn from myriad sources. Often in the midst of a coaching conversation, a phrase comes to mind that encapsulates an idea or way forward. The memorable metaphor allows an idea to stick in the memory and be a constant reminder that there is a way forward which may be different to what we had previously anticipated. The content in this book is organised into 8 thematic sections for ease of use.

Abstract

"Metaphors in the History of Economic Thought: Crises, Business Cycles and Equilibrium explores the evolution of economic theorizing through the lens of metaphors. The edited volume sheds light on metaphors which have been used by a range of key thinkers and schools of thought to describe economic crises, business cycles and economic equilibrium. Structured in three parts, the book examines a wide range of metaphors ranging from mechanics, waves, storms, medicine and beyond. The international panel of contributors focuses primarily on economic literature up to the Second World War, knowing again that the use of metaphors in economic work has seen a resurgence since the 1980s. This work will be of interest to advanced students and researchers in the history of economic thought, and economics and language. Roberto Baranzini is a professor in economics and in the history and philosophy of economics at the Centre Walras-Pareto, University of Lausanne, Switzerland. His research covers the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, focusing on the work of Léon Walras and on the Ecole de Lausanne until the 1960s. Daniele Besomi is senior research fellow at the Centre Walras-Pareto, University of Lausanne, Switzerland. His research centres on the history of business cycles and crises theories, and his writings include some on the key metaphors used frequently by writers on the subjects"--

Abstract

"#Metoo's stunning explosion on social media in October 2017 within days and weeks toppled the likes of Harvey Weinstein, Charlie Rose, Matt Lauer to name a few of the most prominent . But, as the movement spread, not all feminists agreed. Like the sex wars that preceeded it, a confict emerged among feminist supporters and detractors about where to put the emphasis: Danger vs pleasure. Coercion vs choice. This book traces the history of these conflicts, the validity and importance of what each side was seeking, the resistance to finding common ground, the media's pleasure in characterizing the debates as polarized cat fights and squabbles, the curiously similar iterations of these divisions - often stated too simplistically as pro and anti-sex - from the 70's through the 90's to the #metoo movement. The book examines tensions between the need for recognition and protection under the law, and the collosal and ongoing failure of that law to redress historic injustice. #MeToo circumvented law altogether and raised questions yet again, of how regulating sexual harm serves or fails us. Reparative models provide useful tools for moving forward differently, focussing on shared desired outcomes and a willingness to understand the other side. Harvey Weinstein, Al Franken, Aziz Ansari, Avital Ronell. This bookexplores what has been learned from these stories, what traps we repeatedly fall into, how we have been denied our anger, and where to begin to make law work"--

Abstract

"How the history of a word sheds new light on capitalism and modern politics What exactly is capitalism? How has the meaning of capitalism changed over time? And what's at stake in our understanding or misunderstanding of it? In Capitalism, Michael Sonenscher examines the history behind the concept and pieces together the range of subjects bound up with the word. Sonenscher shows that many of our received ideas fail to pick up the work that the idea of capitalism is doing for us, without us even realizing it. "Capitalism" was first coined in France in the early nineteenth century. It began as a fusion of two distinct sets of ideas. The first involved thinking about public debt and war finance. The second involved thinking about the division of labour. Sonenscher shows that thinking about the first has changed radically over time. Funding welfare has been added to funding warfare, bringing many new questions in its wake. Thinking about the second set of ideas has offered far less room for manoeuvre. The division of labour is still the division of labour and the debates and discussions that it once generated have now been largely forgotten. By exploring what lay behind the earlier distinction before it collapsed and was eroded by the passage of time, Sonenscher shows why the present range of received ideas limits our political options and the types of reform we might wish for."--
