Abstract

This book, authored by Edmund Li Sheng, examines China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) within the framework of international relations among China, the U.S., and the EU. It focuses on the triangular dynamics during two key phases: the Trump administration and the early Biden presidency. The book analyzes how geopolitical events such as Brexit, the U.S.–China Trade War, and the COVID-19 pandemic have influenced these relationships. It compares the BRI with initiatives like the Build Back Better World (B3W) by the G7 and discusses NATO's presence in strategic regions. The author aims to elucidate the complexities of the BRI's impact on global politics and the potential for strategic shifts in response to changing international orders. Intended for scholars and policymakers, the book provides insights into the strategic interactions and international political landscape shaped by the BRI.

The chapter on energy security and the US-ROK alliance speaks to how much supply chain resilience has become a critical mission of the alliance. An excellent read for scholars and policymakers.” —Victor Cha, Vice Dean and D.S. Abstract

This book purports to investigate and compare the economic development experiences in both Taiwan and South Korea in last two decades. Taiwan and South Korea’s economic development after WWII is a well-known story. However, their development after the successful post-war industrialization has not been comprehensively studied. The book examines whether the three factors —the role of private business, government policy, and foreign influence—that had contributed to Taiwan’s and Korea’s post-war development, are still relevant during the post-industrial development era. Researchers in the fields of global political economy, Asian economic development and East Asian studies will find this book a fresh and invaluable contribution to the literature. The book will also be of value to policy makers in developing countries in drafting their national development policies, diplomats conducting economic diplomacy with Taiwan and South Korea, and business people planning to expand their business interests in Asia. Min-Hua Chiang is research fellow at the East Asian Institute, National University of Singapore. She obtained her PhD in Economics from Université Pierre Mendès-France, now part of Université Grenoble Alpes in 2008. Her research interests include Asia-Pacific regionalism, trade and investment, and issues related to economic growth and development in East Asia.

Abstract

This book explores the emerging EU-China relationship with a focus on the impact of the Belt and Road Initiative. It takes a narrative approach to understanding the EU-China relationship as a means to highlight how scholars in the EU and China interpret the narrativization of EU-China bilateral relations and to how this bilateral relationship is refracted through relations with third parties. The volume brings together scholars from China and Europe in the fields of Chinese foreign policy, EU studies, and strategic communication. The empirical focus cuts across policy, publics and media, and across history, political economy and diplomacy. The Belt and Road Initiative, alongside the other policy areas addressed in the chapters, offers ways for people in Europe and China to get to know one another in new ways, and for the EU and its member states and the Chinese state to forge new partnerships.

Abstract

"Vincent Brussee is one of the very few scholars who I regularly recommend as essential reading on China’s social credit system. For years, he has remained consistently abreast of the latest developments in this complicated and evolving area, and his writing has helped to dispel the fog of misinformation that surrounds the subject in popular media." --Jeremy Daum, Senior Research Fellow, Paul Tsai China Center, Yale University School of Law "China’s Social Credit System has been a source for fanciful speculation and gratuitous mythmaking. How does it actually work in practice? This book provides a rigorous and detailed review of the system’s historical evolution, its structuring, and its functionality and dysfunctionality. It provides a useful corrective to dominant narratives, as well as a fascinating insight into governance reform in China." - Rogier Creemers, Assistant Professor at Leiden University China’s Social Credit System has fundamentally re-shaped global notions of surveillance, making it into European Union legislation and hundreds of media headlines. Drawing on a rich body of empirical evidence, this book offers one of the first comprehensive assessments of this infamous system, from its fragmented implementation to its implications for both human rights and the market order. Surprisingly, it illustrates even China's government is confused about this messy initiative. Separating fact from fiction, Social Credit is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in technology, governance, and surveillance in China and beyond. Vincent Brussee is an Analyst at the Mercator Institute for China Studies, Europe’s largest think tank and research institute on contemporary China. He is the institute’s lead researcher on the Social Credit System. In addition to publishing extensively for MERICS, his work has been featured in Foreign Policy, the Diplomat, and various national outlets in Europe. He holds a graduate degree with the highest distinction in Asian Studies from Leiden University (the Netherlands), focusing on China’s domestic governance.
