Abstract

Social problems are both diverse and interlinked. For example, tackling social exclusion involves simultaneously addressing barriers to labour market integration, health care issues and education. Coping with an ageing society requires new approaches to health care and employment, as well as to pensions.

Abstract

Social problems rarely have a single cause. For example, tackling social exclusion involves simultaneously addressing barriers to labour market integration, health problems and low education. Coping with an ageing society requires new approaches to health care and employment, as well as to pensions. Social indicators provide the broad perspective needed for any international comparison and assessment of social trends, outcomes and policies. By linking status and response indicators across a broad range of policy areas, social indicators help readers to identify whether and how the broad thrust

Abstract

With over 250 graphs, Indicators of Economic Globalisation helps identify the economic activities of member countries that are under foreign control, and more particularly the contribution of multinational enterprises to growth, employment, productivity, labour compensation, research and development, technology diffusion and international trade.  In so doing, it gauges the intensity and magnitude of the globalisation process, and sheds new light on financial, technological and trade interdependencies within OECD countries.  This book includes Statlinks, URLs under the tables and graphs that link to spreadsheet files showing the underlying data.

Abstract

In this book, Professors Baumol and Oates provide a rigorous and comprehensive analysis of the economic theory of environmental policy. They present a formal, theoretical treatment of those factors influencing the quality of life. By covering both the theory of externalities and its application to environmental policy, the authors have retained the basic structure and organization of the first edition, which has become a standard reference in the field. In this edition, however, they have updated their analysis to incorporate recent research in environmental economics.

Abstract

How's Life? describes the essential ingredients that shape people's well-being in OECD and partner countries. It includes a wide variety of statistics, capturing both material well-being (such as income, jobs and housing) and the broader quality of people's lives (such as their health, education, work-life balance, environment, social connections, civic engagement, subjective well-being and safety). The report documents the latest evidence on well-being, as well as changes over time, and the distribution of well-being outcomes among different groups of the population. This third edition of How's Life? develops our understanding of well-being in new ways. There is a special focus on child well-being, which finds that not all children are getting a good start in life, and those living in less affluent families face more risks to their well-being. The report introduces new measures to capture some of the natural, human, social and economic resources that play a role in supporting well-being over time. A chapter on volunteering suggests that volunteer work can create a virtuous circle: doing good makes people feel good, and brings a variety of other well-being benefits to both volunteers and to society at large. Finally, the report looks at inequalities in well-being across different regions within countries, demonstrating that where people live can shape their opportunities for living well. How's Life? is part of the OECD Better Life Initiative, which features a series of publications on measuring well-being, as well as the Better Life Index, an interactive website that aims to involve citizens in the debate about what a better life means to them.
