Die im vorliegenden Band dokumentierte Tagung hatte es sich zum Ziel gesetzt, eine genauso internationale wie interdisziplinäre Forschergruppe zum Thema ";Soziale Kontrolle"; zu befragen. Wenngleich mit Athen und Rom die antike mediterrane Welt im Vordergrund stand, war der kulturelle und historische Bezugsrahmen großzügig bemessen, so dass aktuelle theoretische Modelle, begriffsgeschichtliche Diskurse und komparative Perspektiven Eingang finden konnten. Die Autor(inn)en nutzten die ganze Bandbreite der Untersuchungsfelder und spürten Formen sozialer Kontrolle in Glaube und Aberglaube, in gesellschaftlichen und sozialen Ge- und Verboten, in Familientraditionen, geschlechtsspezifischen Rollenverständnissen, wirtschaftlichen Netzwerken und nicht zuletzt in politischen Interaktionen auf. Im Ergebnis waren sich alle Forscher(innen) einig: Soziale Kontrolle wird in Staat und Gesellschaft ständig neu erfunden, sie ist nicht starr und endgültig, sondern wandelbar und anpassungsfähig.

Como atuam os conselhos de saúde? São realmente eficazes? Há manipulações, fraudes? Esta obra tata da necessidade do controle da sociedade sobre as ações do Estado e sobre a alocação dos recursos públicos para que sejam atendidos os interesses da coletividade. Particulariza tal controle sobre a política de saúde, abordando os conselhos de saúde como mecanismo institucionalizado para este fim. Descreve o processo de mercantilização da saúde e a influência do ideário neoliberal que vem dificultando a efetivação do SUS e desencadeando a desuniversalização e a privatização da saúde. Apresenta o resultado de um estudo de caso realizado em um conselho municipal de saúde brasileiro no qual avalia até que ponto este controlou de fato os recursos destinados ao Fundo Municipal de Saúde.

La vidéosurveillance fait désormais partie des outils utilisés dans les politiques sécuritaires. Les récentes évolutions techniques rendent son usage de plus en plus intrusif dans la vie privée mais aussi dans l'espace public. Cet ouvrage explore une dimension encore inédite de la vidéosurveillance. Elle réside dans le caractère automatique de la détection des « comportements anormaux » dans l'espace public. L'anormalité est un enjeu fondamental dans la définition de la citoyenneté, en établissant une frontière entre ce qui est jugé acceptable et ce qui doit être réprimé. Or, des projets de recherches appliqués récents tentent de coupler l'usage de la vidéosurveillance avec une évaluation automatique de l'anormalité. Désormais, les algorithmes contribuent à définir ces comportements anormaux et donc, dessinent les figures de l'anormal. L'automaticité modifie considérablement les capacités d'appréciation de la normalité, jusqu'ici de la compétence du juge et des pouvoirs publics. La convergence des techniques (vidéo, base de données informatiques…) contribue à modifier profondément les frontières de l'espace public et, par conséquent, de l'espace démocratique. L'ouvrage présente les débats interdisciplinaires qui ont eu lieu à l'occasion d'une application technique actuellement en cours. S'interroger sur ce qu'est un comportement anormal permet de rappeler les modalités d'élaboration de la normalité dans une démocratie.

Based on a reading of contemporary philosophical arguments, this book accounts for how punishment has provided audiences with pleasure in different historical contexts. Watching tragedies, contemplating hell, attending executions, or imagining prisons have generated pleasure, according to contemporary observers, in ancient Greece, in medieval Catholic Europe, in the early-modern absolutist states, and in the post-1968 Western world. The pleasure was often judged morally problematic, and raised questions about which desires were satisfied, and what the enjoyment was like. This book offers a research synthesis that ties together existing work on the pleasure of punishment. It considers how the shared joys of punishment gradually disappeared from the public view at a precise historic conjuncture, and explores whether arguments about the carnivalesque character of cruelty can provide support for the continued existence of penal pleasure. Towards the end of this book, the reader will discover, if willing to go along and follow desire to places which are full of pain and suffering, that deeply entwined with the desire for punishment, there is also the desire for social justice.
