Few fields have witnessed such impressive advances as image processing in radiology. The progress achieved has revolutionized diagnosis and greatly facilitated treatment selection and accurate planning of procedures. This book, written by leading experts from many countries, provides a comprehensive and up-to-date description of how to use 2D and 3D processing tools in clinical radiology. The first section covers a wide range of technical aspects in an informative way. This is followed by the main section, in which the principal clinical applications are described and discussed in depth. To complete the picture, a third section focuses on various special topics. The book will be invaluable to radiologists of any subspecialty who work with CT and MRI and would like to exploit the advantages of image processing techniques. It also addresses the needs of radiographers who cooperate with clinical radiologists and should improve their ability to generate the appropriate 2D and 3D processing.

This book is a comprehensive reference and practical guide on the technology and application of ultrasound to the musculoskeletal system. It is organized into two main sections. The first is devoted to general aspects, while the second provides a systematic overview of the applications of musculoskeletal ultrasound in different areas of the body. Additional sections address instrumentation, interventional procedures, and pediatric applications. Each chapter of the second main section provides an introduction on clinical anatomy and the essentials of clinical history and physical examination. Thereafter, performance of the ultrasound study is explained and the normal and pathological anatomy is reviewed. To assist in understanding, the ultrasound scans are correlated with drawings, photographs, images obtained using other modalities, and anatomic specimens. There is a generous complement of high-quality illustrations based on high-end equipment. This book will acquaint beginners with the basics of musculoskeletal ultrasound, while more advanced sonologists and sonographers will learn new skills, means of avoiding pitfalls, and ways of effectively relating the ultrasound study to the clinical background.

Computed tomography (CT) is a powerful technique providing precise and confident diagnoses. Close to 65 million CT examinations are performed each year in the United States alone, an astonishing number achieved with an annual double digit growth rate over the past 30 years. The burgeoning use of CT has resulted in an exponential increase in collective radiation dose to the population. Despite investigations supporting the use of lower radiation doses, surveys highlight the lack of proper understanding of CT parameters that affect radiation dose. Dynamic advances in CT technology also make it important to explain the latest dose-saving strategies in an easy-to-comprehend manner relevant to routine clinical practice. This book aims to review all aspects of the radiation dose from CT and to provide simple rules and tricks for radiologists and radiographers that will assist in the appropriate use of CT technique. The second edition includes a number of new chapters on the most up-to-date strategies and technologies for radiation dose reduction while updating the outstanding contents of the first edition. Vendor perspectives are included, and an online image gallery will also be available to readers.

Congenital heart disease is a multi-faceted and complex subject due to the immense variability in cardiac morphology. Some of these changes can be expected as part of the natural history of the various diseases and others are directly related to the original surgery correcting the congenital defect, so it has become clear that adult congenital cardiology is a defined entity on its own. Cardiologists and cardiac radiologists therefore must be prepared for a huge variability in the echocardiographic appearances of congenital heart disease both pre and postoperative, and this book provides the tools to evaluate the potential malformed pediatric or adult heart. Echocardiography in Adult Congenital Heart Disease provides the cardiologist with access to the considerable wealth of imaging data from Royal Brompton Hospital and National Heart and Lung Institute in London, UK. Consequently, the book contains numerous echocardiographic images to illustrate the appearances of rare defects and demonstrates areas for using non-invasive imaging to assess cardiac physiology in different disease. This gives readers a practical insight into the techniques needed to establish non-invasive diagnoses of congenital heart diseases.

Nuclear cardiology is no longer a medical discipline residing solely in nuclear medicine. This is the first book to recognize this fact by integrating in-depth information from both the clinical cardiology and nuclear cardiology literature, and acknowledging cardiovascular medicine as the fundamental knowledge base needed for the practice of nuclear cardiology. The book is designed to increase the practitioner's knowledge of cardiovascular medicine, thereby enhancing the quality of interpretations through improved accuracy and clinical relevance. The text is divided into four sections covering all major topics in cardiology and nuclear cardiology: Basic Sciences and Cardiovascular Diseases Conventional Diagnostic Modalities Nuclear Cardiology Management of Cardiovascular Diseases.

This book provides an overview of X-ray technology, the historic developmental milestones of modern CT systems, and gives a comprehensive insight into the main reconstruction methods used in computed tomography. The basis of reconstruction is, undoubtedly, mathematics. However, the beauty of computed tomography cannot be understood without a detailed knowledge of X-ray generation, photon– matter interaction, X-ray detection, photon statistics, as well as fundamental signal processing concepts and dedicated measurement systems. Therefore, the reader will find a number of references to these basic disciplines together with a brief introduction to the underlying principles of CT. Tis book is structured to cover the basics of CT: from photon statistics to m- ern cone-beam systems. However, the main focus of the book is concerned with detailed derivations of reconstruction algorithms in ?D and modern ?D cone-beam systems. A thorough analysis of CT artifacts and a discussion of practical issues, such as dose considerations, provide further insight into modern CT systems. While mainly written for graduate students in biomedical engineering, medical engineering science, medical physics, medicine (radiology), mathematics, electrical engineering, and physics, experienced practitioners in these fields will benefit from this book as well.

Radiology Illustrated: Gynecologic Imaging is an up-to-date, image-oriented reference in the style of a teaching file that has been designed specifically to be of value in clinical practice. Individual chapters focus on the various imaging techniques, normal variants and congenital anomalies, and the full range of pathology. Each chapter starts with a concise overview, and abundant examples of the imaging findings are then presented. In this second edition, the range and quality of the illustrations have been enhanced, and image quality is excellent throughout. Many schematic drawings have been added to help readers memorize characteristic imaging findings through pattern recognition. The organization of chapters by disease entity will enable readers quickly to find the information they seek. Besides serving as an outstanding aid to differential diagnosis, this book will provide a user-friendly review tool for certification or recertification in radiology.

A new edition of a book is always warranted when it needs to be updated because of advances in the ?eld over time. Although the basics of physics, instrumentation, and radiobiology have not changed, their tech- logical applications have been changing and improving continually. Nuclear medicine professionals worldwide appreciate the book so much that the previous edition has been published in Japanese. Changes in content and appreciation of the book are the two guiding factors in writing this third edition. Like the previous editions, the book is aimed at residents taking the American Board of Nuclear Medicine, the American Board of Radiology (Physics part), and the American Board of Radiology with Special C- petency in Nuclear Medicine examinations, and for the technologists taking the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certifying Board. The book contains 16 chapters, and at the end of each chapter, references and suggested readings have been updated and new questions have been added where appropriate. The ?rst 10 chapters have only minor changes because of the basic nature of the contents. A section on the chi-square test and evaluation of diagnostic tests has been added in Chapter 4. Additional radionuclides have been included in Table 5. 1. In Chapter 8, the section on scintillation detectors has been rearranged and the section on dead time has been expanded. In Chapter 10, the sections on uniformity, gamma camera tuning, and quality control tests have been revised. A new section on software and DICOM has been added in Chapter 11.
