This dissertation examines the conditions and challenges of promoting physical activity among older adults in assisted living facilities. It highlights the positive impacts of physical activity on both physical and mental health and addresses the differing perceptions of physical activity between residents and staff. The study uses an ethnographic approach, incorporating interviews and observations to explore how cultural norms and the physical environment influence activity levels. It reveals that while physical activity is beneficial, it is often not prioritized or facilitated adequately in assisted living settings due to varying definitions and acceptance of activity, limited facilities, and environmental barriers. The research is aimed at healthcare professionals, policymakers, and those involved in elder care, emphasizing the need for improved strategies to support physical activity in these environments.
