Travail d’érudition considéré comme le chef-d’œuvre de Guillaume Budé, le De Asse et partibus eius libri V ("Les Cinq Livres de l’As et ses fractions") cache sous ce titre, abrégé en "De Asse", une étude vaste et novatrice sur les données chiffrées dans l’économie de l’Antiquité, surtout au sein du monde romain, républicain, impérial et tardif, mais incluant aussi des sections consacrées à la Grèce classique et hellénistique ou à l’Orient (Egypte, Perse, Palestine biblique). Ecrit en latin, le texte du De Asse occupe l’équivalent d’environ 800 pages en format in-8°. En dépit de la difficulté du sujet, cet ouvrage savant a bénéficié dès le vivant de Budé d’un véritable succès européen dans la République des Lettres, pour plusieurs raisons : l’intérêt très fort à la Renaissance pour les "realia" de l’Antiquité, la présence dans le De Asse de digressions politiques et culturelles vigoureusement réformatrices, un récit qui accompagne de manière vivante le lecteur dans les méandres des recherches, sans en cacher la complexité et les faux-fuyants. Le statut composite du De Asse a entraîné la nécessité d’un long travail d’identification des citations, mais aussi des recherches sur les sources concrètement utilisées par Budé, qui ne sont pas encore toutes connues mais que Luigi-Alberto Sanchi révèle avec maestria érudite. Le premier tome de cette édition comporte ainsi le texte, les variantes, la traduction française des trois premiers livres de l’ouvrage et de riches index.
