Kaiser Julian II., der sogenannte Apostat (Abtrünnige), versuchte während seiner kurzen Regierungszeit im 4. Jahrhundert, das Christentum philosophisch zu bekämpfen und eine am überkommenen Götterglauben orientierte neuplatonische Doktrin als Gegenprogramm aufzustellen. Der Band vereint Untersuchungen namhafter Historiker, Altphilologen und Philosophiehistoriker zu Julians Denken, seinen Absichten und seinem letztlichen Scheitern. Schwerpunkte der Einzelstudien liegen auf Fragen zum allgemeinen Verhältnis von Platonismus und Christentum, zu Julians Persönlichkeit und philosophischem Programm sowie zu einzelnen Schriften, in denen der Kaiser seine Standpunkte und seine Kritik am christlichen Denken ausführt.
