Les programmes de formation professionnelle supérieure font face à des marchés du travail qui évoluent rapidement et à des défis de plus en plus difficiles à relever. Quel type de formation est nécessaire pour répondre aux besoins d’économies en pleine mutation ? Comment financer les programmes ? Comment les relier aux programmes d’enseignement général et supérieur ? Comment associer les employeurs et les syndicats à ce processus ? C’est à ces questions, et à d’autres, que tentent de répondre les rapports nationaux de la série de l’OCDE Apprendre au-delà de l’école, qui étudie les politiques nationales en matière de formation professionnelle postsecondaire.

Ils sont plus de 700 000 élèves et près de 62 000 enseignants à le fréquenter et pourtant le lycée professionnel demeure mal connu du grand public et peu étudié par les chercheurs en sciences sociales, souffrant sans doute d’une mauvaise réputation et d’une image négative. Or l’enseignement professionnel est un poste d’observation remarquable pour le sociologue attentif aux mutations contemporaines (recomposition de la classe ouvrière, tertiarisation des emplois, accroissement du chômage massif dans les milieux populaires). Déstabilisé dans son identité classiquement ouvrière, rattrapé par des dysfonctionnements divers (ethnicisation, absentéisme, faiblesse du travail collectif au sein des équipes pédagogiques...), le lycée professionnel s’est vu confier une mission délicate : être à la fois une école de la « deuxième chance » et un « lycée des métiers » en phase avec le marché du travail - symbole paradoxal d’un système scolaire qui crée partiellement l’échec tout en inventant des structures censées y remédier. Les interrogations abordées de front dans ce livre posent pour le moins la question de l’avenir d’une institution scolaire méconnue.
