Abstract

The ready-made home of your choice is likely to be something you cannot afford. This and a personal preference for older property are making more and more people take on houses that need more than just a coat of paint to make them habitable. This book guides first-time buyers all the way through the bewildering process of choosing, buying and renovating an older house, examining the possibilities of DIY at every stage from surveying and conveyancing to rolling down the blinds when the work is over - even describing how to camp in the house while the transformation is taking place. It gives money-saving advice on how to make the most of professional services and how to decide what jobs can be done by self-help, and tells the reader how to find cost-cutting expert help and low-price building materials. The advice given is as realistic as the writing is entertaining, and the witty and nostalgic design lifts the book right out of the class of the run of the mill DIY book.

Abstract

"Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer mixed with a precious metal, usually gold, silver or platinum. The technique celebrates the history of the object and, rather than disguising a repair, highlights it and makes it beautiful. ...This book explains what traditional kintsugi is and how it is done, giving historical examples and using interviews of traditional kintsugi masters in Japan. It reflects on the possible reasons for its development, looking especially at a cultural attitude of "creativity through destruction." Different kinds of repairs will be discussed, including the earlier "staple" repair often seen in Chinese ceramic wares and the development of yobitsugi, in which shards from different vessels are pieced together in a patchwork, and other kintsugi techniques." -- Amazon.com. A broken pot is made whole again, and within its golden repair we see a world of meaning. Kintsugi is the art of embracing imperfection. In Western cultures, the aim of repair has been to make the broken item 'as good as new'. Kintsugi on the other hand, is a Japanese art that leaves an obvious repair one that may appear fragile, but which actually makes the restored ceramic piece stronger, more beautiful, and more valuable than before. Leaving clear, bold, visible lines with the appearance of solid gold, it never hides the story of the object's damage. 'Kintsugi' traces memory, bringing together the moment of destruction and the gold seams of repair through finely-honed skills and painstaking, time-consuming labour in the creation of a new pot from the old. There is a story to be told with every crack, every chip. This story inevitably leads to kintsugi's greatest strength. an intimate metaphoric narrative of loss and recovery, breakage and restoration, tragedy and the ability to overcome it. A kintsugi repair speaks of individuality and uniqueness, fortitude and resilience, and the beauty to be found in survival. 'Kintsugi' leads us to a respectful and appreciative acceptance of hardship and ageing.
